Turks and Caicos: Sun, Surf, and Sand

Turks and Caicos are the definitions of surf and turf fun with more focus on the surfing part. There isn’t a really upbeat nightlife here but the relaxing atmosphere combined with a treasury of thrill-seeking water sports and activities make a vacation here worth it. Also, if you are planning to spend your first married vacation in here then Turks and Caicos honeymoon villas[1] are available in plenty where you can relax and light up a beach bonfire to enjoy the starry nights.

But how to enjoy the daytime? Here are some ideas:

Grace Bay

With 12 miles of soft ashen sand and open, calm crystalline water which caters to the sunbathers, Grace Bay is the place to sink your feet into the sand and just relax. Located in an Eastern crook of Providenciales, you can also take a break from the sun to pick up a golf club and hit up the golf course nearby or if you want to go for a nice lunch then restaurants are there in plenty as well, but don’t forget to taste the homemade ice creams therein. It is a public beach and so it is open all days of the week, but that is a double-edged sword since that means it gets filled up very fast especially since there is little shade. So, if you don’t want to burn then start your day early to get those nice, sweet and shady spots.

Bight Reef

After relaxing on the beach for a day, lets head on to Bright Reef for some snorkeling. How to reach? On Grace Bay Providenciales, you will find a footpath which is just offshore the Coral Gardens resort. If you walk along that path you will find floating buoys which will guide you there. Also, the walk there won’t be boring as signs along the way will help you identify the different species you will meet. No matter where you dive in, there will be plenty of colorful fish to explore. If you are lucky then you might spot a sea turtle therein. If you are not an avid snorkeler then there’s no need to worry because with water as shallow as 3 feet in some spots and as deep as 16 feet in others, there’s variety for all kinds of divers. Pro tip: snorkeling should always be attempted on a calm day so save your adventurous side for a fair day.

Chalk Sound National Park

Home to hundreds of small rocky islands, this turquoise lagoon is located on the southwest of Provincials. Here you can set sights on rock iguanas, bonefish, and barracudas. If you are lucky, you might catch a stingray or lemon shark swimming around. The water is calm and clean, as a bonus no powered water-crafts as allowed in here. This place is perfect for families since the water is shallow and calm which makes it great for swimming and the sand is finer which makes the relaxation worth the trip here.

Scuba diving

The third largest barrier reef system in the world turns Turk and Caicos into some of the world’s best scuba diving spots. If you are here to see and interact with loads of aquatic life then you will be pleased to find an array of fish, sharks, turtles, and lobsters. If luck is on your side then you might meet a dolphin as well. Make sure that you are scuba certified and carry the proof or there might be issues in getting a diving gear.

While there are many famous kiteboarding destinations around the world, Turks and Caicos don’t really rank among them, being somewhat of an undiscovered treasure. But people miss out on some excellent wind and water conditions which makes it some of the best in the world where everyone from beginners to the seasoned pros can let some wind into their hairs. Where to go? One of the most popular spots is Long Bay which is a little distance away from grace bay.

Stand up paddle boarding

Yes, you can do paddle boarding and that too in the mangroves where you will be able to meet baby sharks, turtles, fishes and much more. Remember that standing on the board will be easier than what you think but the steering will take a lot of getting used to. Being in the mangroves, you will also learn how to protect the island and its ecosystem. There are three things to keep in mind while out kayaking:

Conch cruise

Yes, it means exactly what it says- you can dive for your own conch along the barrier reef. But that’s not the end after you get it, the people in charge of the cruise also show you how to open it and make a very fresh salad for you. That’s reason to strap into the diving suit and get into the waters.

Now pack in your bags, book those tickets and head out to have a charming vacation in a destination which is yet relatively unknown to the wide population. Get into the water or sink your feet into the sands, all the while enjoying the calmness of the ocean.
